WOODFIRING BASICS
Location: Angelo Ceramics Studio — Montfort L’Amaury
Instructor: Angelo
Level: Open to all levels
Format: Hands-on woodfiring workshop + communal kiln firing
Participant requirement: Bring up to 100 L of bisque-fired work
Course Description
Experience the transformative world of woodfiring in this immersive workshop led by Angelo, ceramic artist and kiln builder based in the heart of Paris. This course is designed for ceramicists who already have bisque-fired pieces and want to discover the depth, beauty, and unpredictability of wood-fired surfaces.
Instead of producing work on-site, each participant brings up to 100 L of bisque-fired ceramics. Together, we prepare these pieces for the firing through slip application, glazing (optional), wadding, and careful consideration of how each form will interact with flame and ash in the kiln.
You will then take part in the full firing of a traditional wood-fire kiln — learning how to load the kiln, place your work for optimal results, and participate in stoking shifts throughout the firing cycle. This communal process creates a strong learning environment and a shared sense of accomplishment as the kiln climbs to temperature.
At the end of the workshop, each participant leaves with a collection of wood-fired pieces, each marked by natural ash deposits, flame paths, and the unique atmosphere of the kiln.
What You Will Learn
How wood, flame, and ash interact with bisqued clay and porcelain
Kiln-loading strategies for woodfiring
How to apply slips, wadding, and surface preparations
Reading the kiln: temperature, atmosphere, stoking rhythm
Safety, teamwork, and kiln-side practice
How to evaluate and finish wood-fired work
What’s Included
All slips, wadding, and kiln materials
Full participation in the communal woodfiring
Guidance throughout preparation, loading, and firing
Finished wood-fired pieces to take home
Who This Course Is For
Ceramicists already producing work in their own studio
Makers curious about atmospheric firing and ash effects
Potters wanting hands-on experience with a wood-fired kiln
Anyone looking to deepen their understanding of fire-based ceramic processes
Additional Information
Participants must bring up to 100 L of bisque-fired pieces (packed volume).
You may bring porcelain or stoneware — both are welcome.
Firing will take place over several days; attending at least one firing shift is required.
Participants can bring personal tools, brushes, or slip containers if desired.
If you’d like, I can also create a short version for social media, a bullet-point version for event listings, or a more poetic version for your website.
